道格格拉特是马萨诸塞州的一个小人物，他是一个保安，而他的家人却都是医生，所以他的生活郁郁不得志。有一次，他和朋友一起去看当地的冰球联盟的比赛。因为朋友对一个被罚出场的队员出言不逊，而招来了麻烦。
情急之下，格拉特一头撞晕了那个队员。这起暴力事件非但没有让格拉特身陷囹圄，反而让他的打架才能得到了冰球队教练的赏识。不久之后，格拉特就成为了该冰球队的一名队员。不会滑冰的他在场上的唯一任务就是打架、保护同队的其他队员不受伤。
几场比赛之后，格拉特的打架能力得到了充分的发挥，他也成了当地冰球界的一颗冉冉升起的新星。而他自己，也找到了久违的快感和生活的乐趣。
